Please join us for Basalt's own version of an outdoor “walk-in” movie theatre: BASALT SUMMER CINEMA: MOVIES IN THE PARK. DIRTY DANCING (Rated PG-13) The 4th of 6 feature films showing every second and fourth Saturday through September 10 in Lions Park on a 16-foot inflatable screen with four Eurolive outdoor speakers at each corner. Gates open at 7pm for a pre-movie community picnic and the movies will start after sunset. Bring picnic baskets or try scrumptious snacks from the Munch LLC and other food trucks and venders. Beer, wine and refreshments will be available for purchase so no alcoholic beverages may be brought into the park. The series, presented by the Basalt Chamber of Commerce, is designed to appeal to a range of ages and interests. The first film in the 2016 series will be a modern classic, the middle a warm and fuzzy shout-out to small-town triumph and the last a double-feature tribute celebrating artistic legends of our time, according to Robin Waters, president of the Basalt Chamber which is organizing the event with Haley Thompson, board member and president of Comet Productions LLC. “Movies have the great power to bring people together,” said Thompson, who grew up in Basalt and is now a film editor. “We hope lots of people will come out to enjoy movies under the stars and help us with future planning.” Here’s the starting line-up [see below for descriptions and ratings]: July 9 - Princess Bride July 23 – Rocky Horror Picture Show August 13 - Local Hero August 27 - Dirty Dancing September 10 - Labyrinth & Purple Rain We envision pre-movie events such as local premiere short films, open mic, student projects, musical performances, virtual reality demos and more, Waters says. The Outdoor Movie System includes a high-definition projector and Blu-Ray wifi-capable player. The planning team is reaching out local schools, the library and entertainers to share the stage. Future movies will be held in the new Triangle Park at Willits and other community locations. Bring your sweatheart, folding chairs, blankets, small umbrellas and flashlights. Costumes are encouraged. The Chamber invested nearly $5,000 in equipment and planning for the movie series and has attracted a strong network of early sponsors and supporters including the Town of Basalt, Alpine Bank, Midland Shoe, Elevate Dental Wellness, Munch LLC, All Valley Maintenance & Mechanical, Touchstone Business Advisors, Heirlooms, Sopris Chiropractic, Walter Meyer and others. Additional sponsors are needed to support the ongoing production and fund future movies. Top level sponsors are recognized in the pre-movie features and video advertising opportunities are available.
