Name: Hiking Through the Geologic Time of Aspen
Date: June 29, 2016
Time: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM MDT
Event Description:
Put your hiking boots on and join a local geology whiz Kayo Ogilby on this hike through 1.8 billion years of geologic time in one day...without leaving the immediate Aspen area. Wait! Don't stop reading! This is not as exhausting or impossible as it sounds. We will spend the morning hiking up the Ute Trail, which provides access to the ancient rocks of the area, and the afternoon walking the Rio Grand trail near Slaughter House on the Roaring Fork to examine the younger rocks of the area. Throughout the whole day we will use the local geology to examine the broader tectonic and climactic themes that comprise the deep history of the West. This is a true field-class and you need to be able to hike to the rocks on the Ute trail in the morning and up Red Butte trail in the afternoon.
