The sounds of brass and woodwind instruments will fill the halls of the library when ten instrumentalist from University of Colorado perform quintet repertoire. The concert will provide an opportunity to hear the combined sounds of instruments that are unique with respect to the materials which they are made and the techniques used by performers to produce musical sounds. The Pearl Wind Quintet is the graduate woodwind quintet-in-residence at the University of Colorado Boulder. Coming from diverse musical and geographical backgrounds, members include Brice Smith (flute), Brittany Bonner (oboe), Annaka Hogelin (clarinet), Spencer Koscik (horn), and Gyungsun Im (bassoon). Under the direction of Dr. Yoshi Ishikawa, the Pearl Wind Quintet’s mission is to engage the audience with performances of unusual and delightful repertoire, and to introduce, teach and promote instrumental music to students of all ages. Avery Brass is the graduate brass quintet-in-residence at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Its members are Ryan Spencer (trumpet), Max McNutt (trumpet), Chandler Spoon (horn), Aaron Zalkind (trombone), and Patrick Young (tuba). The quintet is excited to be returning to Aspen for its educational outreach and public performance tour in 2019. Avery Brass was selected to be a part of the inaugural session of the American Brass Quintet Seminar at the Aspen Music Festival and School (ABQS@A) in the summer of 2018. Among the members of Avery Brass Quintet's individual accomplishments are holding principal and section brass positions in several regional orchestras and brass ensembles, as well as having performed with Colorado Symphony, Opera Colorado, National Repertory Orchestra, New World Symphony, Bayerische Philharmonie, and others. The quintet also performs regularly for ceremonial, religious, and secular events. Each member of Avery Brass is at different stages of graduate degrees in brass performance and pedagogy, and are proud to represent CU-Boulder across the state of Colorado. Lift your spirits from taxation blues by joining us for an hour of brass and woodwind quintets performed by Pearl Brass Quintet and Avery Brass Quintet on April 16, 2019 @ 5:30 PM in the Basalt Library Community Room.
